An Unforgettable Choral Experience: Carmina Burana
Join the Newport Pagnell Singers for a breathtaking evening of choral music under the direction of Jonathan Harris!
The concert will open with Gregorio Allegri’s Miserere, a masterpiece of sacred polyphony that will transport you with its ethereal beauty.
Then, prepare for the electrifying power of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, featuring our choir and five talented percussionists from the Alina Orchestra, who will bring the rhythmic intensity of this iconic work to life.
Carmina Burana is a cantata composed by Carl Orff in 1935–1936, based on a collection of medieval poems found in the Codex Buranus, a 13th-century manuscript. The work is best known for its powerful opening and closing movement, O Fortuna, which has become one of the most recognized pieces of classical music, often used in films, commercials, and sports events.
The cantata is divided into three main sections, framed by O fortuna:
- Primo Vere (Springtime) – Celebrates the arrival of spring and love.
- In Taberna (In the Tavern) – Focuses on drinking, gambling, and hedonism.
- Cour d’Amours (Court of Love) – Explores themes of romantic and erotic love.
It concludes with a return to O Fortuna, symbolising the inescapable power of fate.
Don’t miss this extraordinary musical journey!
